Aspect Ecology helps secure planning permission for major redevelopment project at Parkside Colliery, Lancashire
Following Aspect Ecology’s successful contribution to the appeal in 2021 for Phase 1 of the project, we are pleased to announce that Phase 2 has now received unanimous approval from St Helens Council Planning Committee.
The project is regionally significant and will deliver up to 1.6 million square feet of new manufacturing, industrial and logistics space. The scheme will support jobs, investment and long-term economic growth in the region, and is expected to add £70 million per annum to the borough’s economic output.
To inform the application, Aspect Ecology conducted a comprehensive programme of habitat and faunal surveys to establish the ecological baseline. These were used to support the subsequent Environmental Impact Assessment and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessment. The large-scale nature of the logistics development presented design challenges in achieving positive biodiversity outcomes, and Aspect Ecology provided ongoing ecological advice throughout the 18-month consideration process.
The scheme includes new areas of woodland, wetland, wildflower meadow and amenity parkland. In addition, the project will provide significant funding for extensive off-site habitat creation, delivering large-scale gains for nature conservation.
We are delighted with the positive outcome this scheme has achieved for biodiversity and look forward to monitoring its progress as the development is implemented.
